Early American Journalism Post

After reading through the journalism readings from "Covering America" write a 6-10 sentence response to how and why you think Franklin's approach to journalism developed from "cautionary" to one that embraces openness and critique. Other things to consider: Why is his emphasis on "fair play" so important to American Journalism? Do you relate to this idea of open, direct communication or do you relate more with the cautiousness of Franklin's earlier approach? Which approach do you see here at Proctor?

  1. In the journalism reading from Covering America Ben franklins approach to journalism developed from "cautionary" to one that embraces openness and critique. Fair play is so important to American journalist is because there Isent. Freedom of speech. They wernt allowed to say what they want . They had to obey the crown and write what the crown wants to hear. Now a day we have the the 10 amendments and the first one is freedom of speech and we have a right to say what want as long as it's Isent to vulger. I see freedom of speach here at proctor to a certain point. If we were to say somthing at proctor that wasent approiate we would be reprimanded for it so I see freedom of speech to point here at proctor

  2. Benjamin Franklin was very cautionary about his writings at first because he didn't know how they were going to accepted by his older brother. He wasn't even allowed to write anything for the newspaper, but did it any way, though he did it secretly and under a pen name. But after growing more comfortable with his writings, he also becomes more open and critique like. When he escapes from his brother and creates his own paper in Philadelphia, this is when he truly embraces openness and critique. 'Fair play' allows journalism to have many sides. It creates a median between truth and error but also creates the confidence for the power of truth to win out in the end. I do relate to this idea of open, direct communication but I think that society, and Proctor, needs to become better at communication, especially between upperclassmen and lowerclassmen.

  3. In the reading "Covering America," Ben Franklins writing style changes because the two types of government he lives in. In Britain if you wrote with oneness and critique in Britain you could be punished by the government or the people in different ways. So in America he noticed he had freedom of press and really could be punished to a certain extent. Fair play was so important to American journalism because Britain didn't allow this and now they want to be able to write the truth, and it is only fair that they are able to write what they want, about things they want, and they can say whatever they want to a degree. I relate to this idea of direct communication because it is better to be direct and upfront about something, than to be shy about it. I see this at proctor especially with teachers to students, which is a good thing everybody needs some one in their life who will be up front with them.

  4. The reading touches upon a few key reasons that Ben Franklin changes like he does. First and foremost the different governments. This being England's government having more ristrictions on the paper than America where it was a constitutional right to say what you want and how you feel. Second, Ben Franklin was young. Because of this he didn't think that his brother (the editor of the paper) would publish anything he wrote no matter how good it was. This caused him to be more cautious. But being in America he could also afford to say what he wanted because he has the freedom to say what he wants. In proctor I see people being less worried about doing something wrong because you can. That is a good thing because it allows people to be more open without being worried about being mocked.

  5. In the reading from Covering America, Ben Franklins. I totally agree on what Caleb said that in Britain if you wrote with oneness and critique in Britain you could be punished by the government or the people in different ways. So in America he noticed he had freedom of press and really could be punished to a certain extent. Thus you can state that fair play was indeed so important to American journalism because Britain didn't allow this and now they want to be able to write the truth, and it is only fair that they are able to write what they want.

  6. In the readings from "Covering America" Benjamin Franklin changes his tone and writing style. I think part of it has to do with being accepted by his older brother and his unconfident self when publishing his paper. Im still not sure why he would publish is anonymously. Also in that time period there were different outcomes to writing like that and problems with Freedom of Speech because it had not become an actual thing yet. Proctor has a very up front outlook on school and communication being a key part of learning. Teachers, students and on campus groups are able to say what they want and faculty and staff will help, listen and pursue and idea.

  7. In the journalism reading from Covering America Ben franklins approach to journalism developed from "cautionary" to one that embraces openness and fairness. Freedom is also a big part of that. Back then in England they didn’t have very much freedom. The had to in a way obey the crown. They could be arrested if they wrote or spoke something wrong. Today freedom of speech and the press to very import. Back then people weren’t allowed to write or say what they wanted too. Freedom of speech is at Proctor to a certain degree. People can speak there mind but keeping it respectful, kind and appropriate.

  8. In the reading he changed from cautionary beacause now he was in a free country so he could write in whatever way he wanted. When he was still in England there would be punishment for people who didn't write in a certain way. I generally relate to the direct communication beacause I believe that people should be able to write whatever they are thinking. At proctor I see move of the students saying what they feel. They are writing in direct communication more than they are cautious.

  9. As a young apprentice, Ben Franklin lived in the shadow of his older brother James, and sought to be admired and praised by the 'literary men' would approach his brother. Although many newspapers at the time were filled with wrong or misleading information, Franklin was high strung, and did not like social critique. However, the 'fair play' in this writing is the idea of freedom of opinion and speech. There was no break to tell a journalist when they cross the line. Burnings, hangings, torture and public executions were all legal to write about in the news- even if the information was wrong. Being highly engaged with his world, Franklin was able to shape journalism. "It was Franklin who best articulated the view that journalists serve the public by presenting controversial material in their pages and should be thanked for going to the trouble, not sued, suppressed, or hanged." Using a pen name, Franklin disguised his writing, and eventually created his own paper. "When Ben was just 23, he had amassed enough capital and influence to buy a part interest in a newspaper being published in Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Gazette. Soon he owned it outright." Proctor does not communicate or express ideas as much as it could. We do not have our own school newspaper, and there are some ideas and opinions other students have that would be deemed inappropriate. It is obvious that at a school level, some ideas should not be public.

  10. Ben Franklin was a very cautionary writer at first only because he lived under his brother James arm. So he didn't know at first how people would relay his message and take it. His message could have been good or bad to the new audience. He started to realize that the greatest of writers get critique of there writing because it helps them build apron it. fair play is very important because people should be able to write freely. I relate to this because people should be able to write freely when ever they want and by doing so the writing goes deeper.

  11. Benjamin Franklin’s writing style goes from cautious to more open over time, mostly because of the difference between England and America. In England powerful people like the pope or king decided what was the “truth”. If a writer printed something that went against what the king or pope thought was the truth they could be punished. But in America there was more freedom of speech. His emphasis on “fair play” is important to journalism because it goes along the lines of freedom of the press. Proctor’s approach to freedom of speech goes along with the open, direct communication, as long as what people say doesn’t hurt others and doesn’t go against school rules.

  12. Ben Franklin was a pretty cautionary writer at first because in his early career, he stay with his brother and his brother gave him so many rules on his essay. He was still a teenager and his mind was not ripe enough. In the other hand, the colonies was under the rules of British and the social was not open like that. His writing style became openness and critique because he was out of his brother's control, he was living free and he could write anything he want. He became a adult and he has some experiences to support him writing some more openness essay. The fair play was so important because the printer was innocent, the differ of the opinion of the readers is not their fault. I thought it was related to open approach because the open mind could let people to have many different opinions so that the argument could be produced. I could see it in Proctor such as all the students could say what they want to say anytime and anywhere.

  13. Ben Franklin's writing style changes not just because the two countries he lives in are very different but ultimately because one supports the freedom of speech and the other does not. There were always larger and more important people to think of and that decided the law in Britain whereas in America, it does not matter what you're stature is, all that matters is whether you're a citizen if this country and if you are, you have the freedom to do whatever you want. Franklin's emphasis on fair play is significant because it has to do with America's first amendment which includes both freedom or press and speech. Proctor's approach towards this is simple, because we live in this country of freedom, you are allowed to say what you want as long as it follows the guidelines of no derogatory or insulting comments toward anyone or anything.

  14. At the beginning Benjamin Franklins career in journalism he was timid about what people would say about his writing due to the fact that there could be punishment. He was also afraid of how his brother was going to react. As his time went on and on in the US he realized he had more freedom and was more privileged right freely. In Britain they have strict rules on what you could right. So once he got more and more comfortable he started being more and more articulate. I think here at proctor we can express our ideas through writing and talking openly. And that directs to the way I am and how I live, very open.

  15. To begin with Franklin was very cautious with his writing because his older brother would most likely not approve. He had to use a cover name so that nobody would know that it was him. When he finally got away from his brother, he was more free. Eventually he owned his own paper and he was able to be open about it being older with no constraints. "Fair play" comes in with the freedom of press. Everything is fair play then, you are supposed to be able to say whatever you want. Right now at Proctor I see Franklins open approach because at proctor the teachers and students communicate and are accepted by one another.

  16. When Benjamin Franklin first embarked on his journalism career he was cautious to please his older brother and superior. When he wrote he used the pen name "silence dogood" so as to not arrows his brothers attention. As his career gained momentum though, he became more open with his writing and opened his own news paper press. He created the idea of free press by writing the truth as he saw it and not caring who was offended.

  17. When Ben franklin started journalism he was still in his younger years. He used the name "Silence Dogood" because he did not want his older brother or any of his superiors finding out about his journalism. He also ended up starting his own paper. He became more free from his brother and continued to write. Once he achieved freedom of speech he was happy and could do what he wanted. Ben Franklin died on April 17, 1790 at the age of 84.

  18. Ben Franklins career as an American Journalist started in his younger years using only under a secret pin name. As his career got more public and gained speed Ben started to become more public with his writing, publishing them without a pin name and eventually started his own paper. He emphasized on "fair play" by writing about what he really saw, not sugar coating it or making it more interesting regardless of who it offended or who's ego it tarnished.

  19. Benjamin Franklin's writing style changed because he went from being in a stricter country to being in a country where freedom of speech is encouraged. A big part of American journalism is digging in and finding the dirty truth. Ben Franklin also had a big emphasis on fair play with journalism. This makes sense because the big draw American journalism is that the people are getting educated on current events. Ben Franklin appreciated the ability to be able to freely write. American journalism is an amazing thing.
